The domestic garbage compactor

The concept

YeeZee is a line of garbage compactors conceived to reduce the volume of household waste. These garbage bins can compact daily waste in a simple manner, without any need of electricity, and respecting the aesthetics of the room.

Motivation

This project was an assignment from a client in the waste management industry very much implicated in reducing the impact from garbage disposal.

The idea was to ease garbage compaction there where people throw away their garbage (homes, offices, kitchens, etc.). This way, the volume of waste could be reduced before the bags reach the garbage containers on the street, preventing scattered waste and bad smells, and reducing traffic or garbage trucks.

Features

Picture
Frontal gate
The bag can be accessed from the front so the user doesn't have to lift it up. This is particularly useful since compaction increases the weight of the bag.
Picture
Rear wheels
A couple of wheels installed behind lets the user bring the compactor down the the disposal point. Again, this utility pursues relieving the user from carrying much weight.
Picture
100% ecofriendly
The product is designed to be manufactured from 100% recycled PP or HDPE and is fully recyclable.
YeeZee can help to reduce waste volume up to 60%
It's purely inspired by end-users' habits and limitations, with a shape conceived to fit to most environments, round classy corners and a clean finishing.

Sweating money

The concept

A FitWatt system consists of a gym with 7 different machines specially designed to exploit selected groups of muscles, and to collect and transform the calories burnt into electric power. They adapt their functioning to human natural movement and sports, and not the other way round - as usual -boosting each training session to the limit to release and capture enormous amounts of calories

Have you trained hard? Then you deserve a reward! Power generation helps to save money and yields revenues, from which users will benefit.
Picture

Motivation

FitWatt is, perhaps, our most challenging project. The idea came after endless gym sessions watching  outrageous amounts of metabolic energy being squandered. And we thought "how about being paid for going to the gym? What if we could collect all that power produce electricity with it?"

So, we got spirited enough to propose our own set of energy production machines based on human workout - notice the difference with saying gym machines that also produce electricity, which are the ones you may have seen already in the internet!

Features

Picture
Exclusive design and features
Their special design makes them unique. Users do not learn how to use a workout machine. Rather, it is the machine's mechanism which is adapted to them. The goal is to maximise workout by letting the user go to their limits.
Picture
Savings and revenues
Optimised energy production leads to important energy savings and economic benefits from injection of kWh to the grid. IT also makes the gym different, unique,  and most competitive with other gyms around.
Picture
2 x Business opportunity
This binomial combination of a power plant and a gym allows different business approaches with which clients can gain loyalty by being compensated and motivated to produce more energy each time they enter a FitWatt space.
This is a long-term project in which are developing 7 different high-performance machines, in which the ultimate goal is optimal kWh production, without neglecting aesthetics and ergonomics.

Flat going circular

The concept

This 24cm-long  compactor can reduce the volume of most of containers of up to 2.5L volume including plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and tetra-packs. Sqwissy is extensible and can be unfolded to ease manual and effortless compaction, thanks to the sole action of Gravity.

It is modern, minimalistic, and inspired by ocean waves, so much affected by inefficient recycling systems. Sqwissy is small enough to be stored away in a drawer or hung on a wall in a kitchen, for example.
It is designed for easy assembly and disassembly, repairable, and customisable within range of colours.

Motivation

While working for YeeZee, we realised that our labour wouldn't be complete without a compaction alternative for containers (drinks, cleaning products, milk, shampoo...). Most people want (or is forced) to recycle. But when containers start to pile up and take much room, it cab be a burden.

We wanted to make something that could be so small, cheap, and easy to use that it could be a cool solutions for families and offices. We also pursued excellence in ergonomics with an effortless system that could be handled by older people, children, etc. Besides, it fits your deco and helps you to release your stress, so it is a must-have item.

Features

Picture
All User. All containers
Just a person's weight and a plane surface is enough for compaction. No particular strength is needed to manipulate it, so anyone can use it. Sqwissy is able to compact plastic bottles (PET, HDPE, PP, LDPE...), aluminium cans and tetrapacks, from 0.33L to 2.5L volume.
Picture
Recycling + Recycled + Recyclable
A compactor made from recycled polypropylene and recycled stainless steel, helping to recycle, and 100% recyclable, is the ultimate symbol of a circular economy.
Picture
Clean & hygienic
The volume is reduced without damaging the containers. If needed, it can be cleaned with a cloth and detergent, and disinfected with alcohol.
Sqwissy is the result of a pure Design Thinking process, with lots of prototyping and collection of bottles, cans and tetrapacks for testing, until we diminished volume of containers up to 90%! Yes: we had fun building it.

Ongoing projects...

From design to mentoring, at EeD we carry out many activities related to environmentally conscious design.
Here there is a list of some of the projects and activities we are currently undertaking (*)

(It is our commitment to strongly protect our clients' Intellectual Property (IP). So we disclose information accordingly)
The eco-millennial project

A generation of millennials driven by technology, social media, and immediateness, is having a huge impact in our society. They do influence and are influenced by it, at the speed of their internet connections. So, they have the ability to promote environmentalism like never before.

As they become productive actors in our society, they will join the labour market and become self-sufficient and independent in a (post) pandemic paradigm where telework and indoor living has won the battle to classic (yet recent) lifestyle.

With this reality in mind, in this new project, we assist a young entrepreneur to bring recycling to the core of their lives, with the strong hope that they will take circular living to the next level. By influencing this new generation to act sustainably, we bet this way on planting the seed of the World's sustainable development.

Affordable, accessible & respectful walking aid

Did you know that
  • falling is the 2nd leading cause of deadly injuries, meaning 424K casualties every year? (GVR 2021)
  • more than 1.7B people worldwide suffer from musculoskeletal diseases? (WHO 2021)
  • around 9% of the population is 65+? (WHO 2021)
60% of these falls are caused by accidents, traumas or diseases, being muscle-bone related (low back pain, arthritis, arthrosis, sclerosis...) and neurological diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or dementia) the most common. Around 25% of seniors suffer from age-related disabilities, making their lives much uncomfortable, limited, and serious risks of falling.

We got a call from a Day Care Centre in Madrid (Spain) where they look after older people with neurological disorders and a number of cases with complicated psychomotricity abilities. Since then, we are developing together a walking aid to bring safety and comfort to their users. We highlight the huge range of end-users it can help to, the level of customisation it can get and, of course, its utter environmental compromise.

This beautiful and encouraging project managed to get ahead despite the pandemic, thanks to the support and contribution from relevant actors such as the Haute École d'Ingénierie in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and from Akita University (Japan), and the help of physiotherapists, doctors, and experts in geriatrics.

Workshops

Upcycling

One of our purposes for 2022 is to offer a space for neighbours of the commune of Morges, where we can fix or upcycle products together, sharing ideas and knowledge related to Circular Economy. This idea is currently under development and will count with the support of local eco-entrepreneurs such as that of our local partner Recyclink.
Eco-driving

In 2016 EeD presented at Electronics Goes Green EGG Berlin (Germany), brought by Fraunhofer, our project Eco-driving: a driving style to optimise the use phase of our vehicles. The goal was to show eco-driving techniques to the audience and to share experience and data with vehicle manufacturers regarding trends in transports.

Since then, we have been providing eco-driving lessons for free to any driver committed to reducing the environmental impact of their driving. Gasoline, Diesel, hybrid... almost any vehicle can reduce consumption, emissions, and expenses with very easy yet effective tips!
